Kata Tjuta Tours
The amazing Kata Tjuta – also known colloquially as the Olgas – is an assemblage of 36 large and impressive bornhardts (domed rock formations) that are located about 365 km (227 mi) southwest of Alice Springs and 25 km (16 mi) west of Uluru (Ayers Rock). Both Kata Tjuta and Uluru are the primary landmarks within the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and there’s certainly good reason for that. The domes of Kata Tjuta cover a massive 21.6 km2 (8.37 sq. mi), and with their ochre hue and impressive size, you could almost say they look like an older, more worn version of Uluru. The group’s highest peak – Mount Olga – was named after Queen Olga of Württemberg – a fitting moniker for such a majestic landmark.
As with Uluru, Kata Tjuta holds great spiritual significance to the local Anangu Indigenous group – particularly to their men, as the site is used for sacred, male-only ceremonies. In fact, some of these ancient ceremonies and surrounding legends are still kept secret and only shared amongst the Indigenous male ancestors considered worthy. This all adds an air of mystery to the site, causing many people to find Kata Tjuta even more alluring than Uluru!
While visiting, there are a number of ways to see the best of Kata Tjuta. There are quite a few walking trails (ranging from very easy to more difficult) that take you around and through this megalithic wonder. The dune viewing and sunset viewing areas allow visitors to see Kata Tjuta at its best – in the glorious morning light or serene sunset atmosphere. The shifting colours and shades during these times are phenomenal! There are also a number of tours that take in Kata Tjuta and then venture further out to Uluru and surrounding landscapes. Whichever option you choose, you’ll forever have fond memories of this gorgeous landscape.
